Climate change is a reality: this can be seen in the agendas of various European countries. That’s why black truffles are at risk, according to a study published in the journal Science of Total Environment. Likewise, according to another study by researchers from the University of Constance in Germany, a temperature increase of three degrees Celsius would be sufficient to prevent truffles from developing. Why? The reasons are obvious: with a widespread increase in temperatures, increasingly warmer and longer summers, and a lack of rainfall, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the soils in our country to have the necessary quality for black truffles to survive.

As we already know, fresh black truffles require good soil moisture levels. However, the situation of extreme drought experienced at the beginning of each season has become commonplace for about a decade. Factors such as heatwaves, wildfires, pests, and diseases in plantations also do not help. All of this forces farmers to make greater investments in irrigation, increasing the cost of black truffle production. In this way, the only thing that is clear is that the price of this product will continue to increase in the coming years.

In fact, a document from the University of Stirling in Scotland, titled “An assessment of the black truffle sector in Europe under climate change,” has found key findings in this field. This study points out that, in the current context, European truffle production is in danger. It is likely to decrease between 78 and 100% between 2071 and 2100.

In conclusion, it is challenging to offer an immediate solution to the difficulties faced by black truffle production in Spain. However, at Igual Escriche, we will continue to try to minimize our impact on the natural environment by advocating for sustainable production.
